MoneyMonk is written for the zzp'er who tracks hours, and it does that job well: urenregistratie and ritten per project, bonnetjes from the app, free PSD2 couplings with ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, Knab, Triodos, ASN and bunq, btw-aangifte and ICP-aangifte, and the numbers ready for your inkomstenbelasting. Even the pricing follows the shape of a freelance career, with plans stepping up by revenue: the Basis plan is aimed at turnover up to 50,000 euros and Pro up to 100,000, with Ultra for anything above.
The payment side is one thing wearing one hat. If you want clients to pay a MoneyMonk factuur online, you open a Mollie account and connect it, and that account is then the entire online payment capability of your business. It works, and 32 cents for an iDEAL payment is a good price. It also means a single third-party relationship stands between you and every online payment you can accept, priced per transaction and governed by terms you did not write. Cards come in at 1.80% plus 25 cents inside the EEA and 3.25% plus 25 cents outside it.
BTCPay Server is the opposite arrangement. It is open-source, MIT-licensed software rather than a company you sign up with, developed in the open and funded by grants and donations rather than by taking a share of payments. There is no merchant application, no underwriting, no percentage, and nobody holding your money at any point. It generates a receiving address for each invoice from a wallet you control, watches the network for the payment, and tells PayInBTC.me when it arrives.
The reason most zzp'ers never actually use it is the server. BTCPay needs a Bitcoin node kept patched, online and backed up, and in a company of one those are unbillable hours you will not spend twice. So we run it for you. PayInBTC.me hosts a fully managed BTCPay Server as an add-on at 2,500 sats a month or 25,000 sats a year, roughly 2.50 euros a month, with the node, the updates, the monitoring and the backups on our side and the wallet keys entirely on yours. That is the whole point of the add-on: self-custody without a second job.
PayInBTC.me then puts it on your MoneyMonk invoices. You connect both once, and the invoices you choose carry a Bitcoin payment link next to your iDEAL button and your bank details, visible in the Klantportaal alongside them. The MoneyMonk connection is read-only: we read the invoice amount, currency and factuurnummer to build the payment page, and we cannot touch your uren, ritten, bonnetjes or btw-aangifte.
The usual trade-off is convenience against control. A processor is a five-minute signup and holds your money; self-custody is genuinely yours and needs a server nobody in a one-person business wants to maintain. Hosted BTCPay from PayInBTC.me removes that trade for 2,500 sats a month. We provision the instance and run the node, apply the updates, watch the uptime and take the backups. You connect your own wallet, ideally a hardware wallet, and BTCPay derives a fresh receiving address from it per invoice. We never hold your keys and cannot spend, freeze or redirect a payment. Hosting the software is not the same thing as holding the money.
For a MoneyMonk user, Mollie is not one option among several. It is the option, because the iDEAL button on your factuur does not exist without it. That is a single point of dependency for the whole business: onboarding questions, periodic reviews, terms that can change, and a company that reserves the right to reconsider. Adding BTCPay Server does not remove Mollie, and for Dutch clients you will keep using it. What it does is give you a second, entirely independent way to be paid, one that no company can withdraw because no company is providing it.
A month of billed hours is one big invoice rather than fifty small ones, which is the worst possible shape for percentage pricing. BTCPay Server takes nothing at all, not as an introductory rate but because there is no processor in the flow with revenue to collect. What is left is the Bitcoin network fee, PayInBTC.me's flat 1,500 sats per invoice or 2,500 sats a month, and the hosting add-on if you take it. A 2,000 euro month and a 9,000 euro month cost the same to collect, which is not a sentence you can write about any card rate.
For a zzp'er the invoice is not merchant turnover passing through a business. It is your income, and it lands in the same place your rent comes from. BTCPay Server settles it straight to a wallet you hold, with no processor balance, no payout schedule and no minimum threshold in between. There is nobody positioned to hold a payment while a pattern is reviewed, which is a different kind of comfort from a better rate.
The hosted instance runs the same open-source software as one you would build yourself, so moving is a change of address rather than a migration. If you later want your own BTCPay on your own hardware, you point PayInBTC.me at it and your MoneyMonk connection, your invoices and your wallet all stay as they are. If you already run BTCPay, connect it from the start and skip the add-on. Nothing about the hosting is designed to make leaving difficult.
With hosted BTCPay the whole setup is about five minutes, because there is no server to build. If you run your own instance, the only difference is that you point us at it instead.
A single invoice makes this look small, so take a year instead: a 3,000 euro retainer invoice sent every month, 36,000 euros of billing. The euro comparisons use Mollie's published rates, because Mollie is what sits behind the iDEAL button on a MoneyMonk invoice. The last two rows separate running BTCPay yourself from having us host it.

Written per invoice these differences look like rounding. Written across a year of retainer work they are a week of billable time. The honest caveat stays the same: for a Dutch client, iDEAL at 32 cents is cheaper than anything here and you should keep offering it. The row that decides this is the third one. One foreign client on a monthly retainer costs over a thousand euros a year to collect by card, and the same twelve payments cost about fifty with a fully managed BTCPay Server behind them. Note the gap between the last two rows as well: paying us to run the node adds roughly twenty-five euros a year, which is the price of never thinking about a Bitcoin node again.
You need a MoneyMonk account and a BTCPay Server store. For almost every zzp'er that means taking the hosted add-on and letting us run the node, since the alternative is unbillable maintenance you will resent by the third month.
