Can MoneyMonk accept Bitcoin?

Not by itself. MoneyMonk is built for one kind of person, the Dutch zzp'er who writes hours, and it is unusually good at that job: urenregistratie and ritten per project, bonnetjes scanned from the app, free PSD2 bank couplings with ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, Knab, Triodos, ASN, bunq and others, btw-aangifte and ICP-aangifte, and the figures you need for your inkomstenbelasting at the end of the year. What it does not have is a Bitcoin payment option on the invoice, and none of its integrations adds one.

The payment side is thinner than the bookkeeping side by design. To let clients pay a MoneyMonk factuur with iDEAL or Wero, you need a Mollie account, opened separately and connected to MoneyMonk. Mollie also brings the transactions back in daily, and the bank couplings pull in the rest. That works well, and it also means the one online payment method on your invoice depends on a merchant account you maintain with a third party, priced per transaction: iDEAL at 32 cents, cards at 1.80% plus 25 cents inside the EEA, 3.25% plus 25 cents outside it.

payinbtc.me sits between MoneyMonk and the Bitcoin payment provider you choose. You connect both once. The connection to MoneyMonk is read-only: we read the invoice amount, currency and factuurnummer so the payment page shows the correct total, and we cannot create, edit or delete anything in your administratie, your uren, or your btw records. From then on, the invoices you pick carry a Bitcoin option next to whatever you already offer.

When your client opens the Bitcoin link, we take the invoice total from MoneyMonk and convert it to BTC at that moment's rate, then show a payment page with a QR code. They pay from any wallet, over the Lightning Network for near-instant settlement or on-chain for larger amounts. The Bitcoin arrives directly in your wallet or provider account. We never hold funds and we never take a share of an invoice.

For a zzp'er the arithmetic is simple, because the invoices are few and large rather than many and small. A month of hours is often somewhere between 2,000 and 8,000 euros, on a handful of invoices, sometimes to a client in Berlin or London rather than Utrecht. A percentage-based method costs more precisely when the invoice is bigger, and a foreign card adds to it. A Bitcoin payment costs the same regardless of the amount or the country, and it settles in seconds rather than on the next banking day. You mark the invoice paid yourself once our email arrives, because our access is read-only. Automatic reconciliation is on our roadmap and we will not claim it before it exists.

Which Bitcoin provider works best with MoneyMonk?

All 14 providers connect to MoneyMonk. But MoneyMonk users are almost all Dutch zzp'ers billing hours in euros, on a few sizeable invoices a month rather than a stream of small ones. That shape narrows the sensible starting points to four:

Our pick for most MoneyMonk users

Lightning Checkout

A managed provider in your own language, for typical zzp invoice sizes

Lightning Checkout works in Dutch and English, is built for European businesses, and routes payments over the Lightning Network for smaller amounts and on-chain for larger ones. A month of hours usually lands right where Lightning is at its best, which means your client scans a QR code and the payment is done in seconds for a fee measured in cents. It pays out daily and sends a monthly invoice showing fees and VAT, which is one clean supplier line in your MoneyMonk administratie rather than a reconciliation puzzle. Confirm the current rate and cap with them before you commit.

BTCPay Server

Zzp'ers who would rather not maintain another merchant account

You already keep a Mollie account alive to offer iDEAL. BTCPay Server is the opposite arrangement: open-source software rather than a company you signed up with, taking nothing from the payment and putting nobody between your client and your keys. If running a Bitcoin node is not how you want to spend a Friday, our hosted BTCPay add-on handles the infrastructure at 2,500 sats a month while the custody stays entirely yours.

See MoneyMonk + BTCPay Server setup →

OpenNode

The fastest route to a first Bitcoin invoice

OpenNode is the shortest onboarding of the fourteen, which matters when a client has asked to pay in Bitcoin and you would rather answer this week than next month. Supports Lightning and on-chain, works with clients well outside Europe, and gives you a dashboard without any infrastructure to run. Availability and merchant requirements change, so check OpenNode's current terms for a Dutch eenmanszaak before you rely on it.

Coinsnap

Keeping the balance sheet in euros before your IB-aangifte

A European Bitcoin processor supporting Lightning and on-chain, with an option to convert to euros paid into your bank account through licensed brokers instead of holding BTC. For a zzp'er who wants the extra payment method but no crypto position to explain in the inkomstenbelasting, that keeps the amount landing in the bank equal to the amount on the factuur. Settlement options and eligible countries vary, so check Coinsnap's terms for your situation.

Undecided? Lightning Checkout is the shortest path if you want somebody else running the payment side, and our hosted BTCPay is the one to pick if you would rather have no third-party account in the chain at all. Changing provider later does not touch your MoneyMonk connection.

How to add Bitcoin payments to MoneyMonk: step by step

Estimated time: 5 minutes

1

Create your payinbtc.me account

Register at payinbtc.me. No credit card needed, and your first month is free.
2

Connect MoneyMonk and authorise access

Choose MoneyMonk as your bookkeeping software and authorise the connection to your account. The access is read-only and limited to invoice data: amount, currency, factuurnummer and client name. We cannot create or change a factuur, touch your urenregistratie or ritten, reach your bank couplings, or see your btw-aangifte. Unlike the Mollie account you keep for iDEAL, there is no merchant relationship to maintain on our side.
3

Connect your Bitcoin provider

Link an account with any of the 14 supported wallets and payment providers, from Lightning Checkout and OpenNode to Coinsnap. No provider yet? Add our hosted BTCPay Server and receive payments straight to your own wallet without running anything yourself.
4

Send facturen from MoneyMonk as usual

Write your hours, generate the invoice from your project as you always do, and send it. The Bitcoin payment link travels with the invoice next to your iDEAL button and your bank details, and it shows up in the Klantportaal alongside them. Your invoice layout, numbering, offertes and btw settings stay exactly as they are, and any client who prefers iDEAL keeps using iDEAL.
5

Get paid and get notified

Your client opens the link, sees the invoice total converted to BTC in real time, and pays by scanning a QR code from any wallet. Lightning payments settle in seconds, including on a Sunday. You get an email the moment it clears, and the Bitcoin lands in your wallet or provider account.

Why MoneyMonk users add Bitcoin

Few large invoices are where a percentage hurts most

A zzp'er billing a month of hours sends a handful of invoices worth thousands each, not hundreds worth ten euros. Card rates are built for the second case: 1.80% plus 25 cents inside the EEA and 3.25% plus 25 cents outside it, so a 4,000 euro invoice from a London client costs around 130 euros to collect. Bitcoin does not price by invoice size, and payinbtc.me charges a flat fee in sats.

One fewer merchant account to keep alive

Offering iDEAL on a MoneyMonk invoice means opening and maintaining a Mollie account, with its own onboarding and its own monthly statement. A Bitcoin option through BTCPay Server involves no merchant relationship at all, and even a managed provider is a single signup rather than a second administration to keep in order.

Paid on Friday evening, not on Tuesday

iDEAL and SEPA move on banking days, and a client who approves an invoice at the end of the week leaves you waiting. A Lightning payment settles within seconds at any hour. For someone whose cash position is one person's invoices, that is a practical difference rather than a theoretical one.

Everything MoneyMonk does for you keeps working

Urenregistratie, ritten, kosten per project, bonnetjes from the app, the free PSD2 bank couplings, your Klantportaal, your btw-aangifte and ICP-aangifte and the figures for your inkomstenbelasting all carry on unchanged. Our connection is read-only, so Bitcoin is added next to your existing payment options and takes nothing away.

MoneyMonk + Bitcoin: common questions

Can MoneyMonk accept Bitcoin payments natively?

No. MoneyMonk offers iDEAL and Wero on invoices through a connected Mollie account, and pulls transactions back in from Mollie and your bank couplings. There is no crypto payment method anywhere in the product or in its integration list. payinbtc.me adds a Bitcoin payment option to the invoices you already send, without waiting for native support and without changing anything inside MoneyMonk.

Do I still need my Mollie account?

Only if you want to keep offering iDEAL, which most zzp'ers do. payinbtc.me does not replace Mollie and does not interfere with it: the Bitcoin link sits next to your iDEAL button rather than instead of it. If you were only keeping Mollie alive for the occasional foreign client whose card costs you 3.25% plus 25 cents, that is the case worth reconsidering.

Does payinbtc.me change anything in my MoneyMonk account?

No. The connection is read-only. We read the invoice amount, currency and factuurnummer so the payment page shows the correct total. We cannot create or edit facturen or offertes, touch your urenregistratie, ritten or bonnetjes, reach your bank couplings, or see your btw-aangifte.

How does the Bitcoin amount stay accurate if the price moves?

The conversion happens when your client opens the payment page, not when you send the invoice. They see the euro total of your MoneyMonk factuur converted to BTC at that moment's rate, with a short validity window on the quote. If it expires, they get a fresh one. You receive the full invoice value.

How do I reconcile a Bitcoin payment in MoneyMonk?

You mark the factuur as paid yourself. We email you the moment the payment clears, and because our access is read-only we do not write anything into your administratie. It is the same handling as a payment that arrives outside your bank koppeling. Automatic reconciliation is on our roadmap, and we will describe it as available when it is.

What does it cost?

Pay per invoice at 1,500 sats, roughly 1.50 euros, charged only when a client actually pays in Bitcoin. Or take unlimited invoices at 2,500 sats a month, about 2.50 euros, or 25,000 sats a year. Your first month is free, with three free invoices on the pay-per-use plan. We never take a percentage. Your Bitcoin provider may charge its own fee, and BTCPay Server charges none because it is software rather than a processor.

How do I handle this in my btw-aangifte and inkomstenbelasting?

The invoice itself does not change. The total, the btw and the factuurnummer stay as MoneyMonk recorded them, because Bitcoin is only how your client settled a euro amount, and your btw-aangifte runs as it always has. What needs a decision is how you record the Bitcoin you hold afterwards and what happens when its value moves before your inkomstenbelasting. Take that one to your accountant rather than to us.
