Can Moneybird accept Bitcoin?

Not natively. Moneybird's online payment methods run through connected providers such as Mollie and Adyen: iDEAL and Wero, SEPA direct debit (incasso), credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Bancontact for Belgian clients. Every one of them moves euros through the banking system. None of them moves Bitcoin. Moneybird's own help center is direct about it: there is no ready-made way (geen kant en klare oplossing) to process a Bitcoin or crypto payment inside the product, only a manual currency workaround for bookkeeping after the fact. payinbtc.me is how Moneybird users add the option now.

Moneybird is built for the Dutch and Belgian market, for zzp'ers, freelancers and small MKB businesses that send facturen and file btw. Its strongest feature is the tax side: you check the figures and submit your btw-aangifte to the Belastingdienst in a click, and connected payment providers reconcile most euro receipts for you. The invoicing and belasting workflow is polished. The payment side stops at euro rails, which is exactly where a growing number of clients now want to pay in Bitcoin instead.

payinbtc.me sits between Moneybird and the Bitcoin payment provider you pick. You connect both once, and the connection to Moneybird is read-only, so we get access to invoice data and nothing else. We read the invoice amount, currency and invoice number so the payment page shows the right total. We cannot write to your administratie, edit a factuur, or touch your ledger or btw records. From then on, the invoices you send carry a Bitcoin option next to iDEAL. Clients who want it use it. Everyone else pays the way they always have.

When a client opens the Bitcoin payment link, we fetch the invoice total from Moneybird and convert it to BTC at that moment's rate, then show a payment page with a QR code. They pay from any wallet, over the Lightning Network for near-instant settlement, or on-chain for larger amounts. The Bitcoin arrives directly in your wallet or provider account. We never hold your funds and we never take a percentage of the invoice.

For a Moneybird business, the sharpest case is the cross-border invoice. A Utrecht consultant billing a client in Germany, or an Antwerp studio billing one outside the eurozone, is currently choosing between a card payment carrying an international rate and an FX markup, or a bank transfer that leaves the money in limbo for days. A Bitcoin payment settles in seconds, on a Sunday, for a fee measured in cents, and it does not care which side of a border either party sits on. You still record it yourself: we email you when the payment clears and you mark the invoice as paid in Moneybird. Automatic reconciliation is on our roadmap and we will not claim it before it exists.

Which Bitcoin provider works best with Moneybird?

All 14 providers connect to Moneybird. But Moneybird's users sit in the Netherlands and Belgium, invoicing in euros and often billing clients elsewhere in the EU. These four are where most Moneybird businesses should start:

Our pick for most Moneybird users

Lightning Checkout

A Dutch provider for a Dutch platform

Lightning Checkout has Dutch roots, is based in Estonia and focuses on helping local businesses accept Bitcoin, with Lightning and on-chain payments, a web point-of-sale and a portal for viewing payouts. For a Moneybird business that invoices in euros and prefers a provider in its own market and language, it is the natural first stop. Fees and payout schedules are set by Lightning Checkout and can change, so confirm the current terms on their site before you commit.

Coinsnap

EU businesses that want the value in euros

A European Bitcoin processor with Lightning and on-chain support. Payments can settle straight to your own wallet on a self-custody basis, or convert automatically to euros paid into your bank account through licensed brokers. Useful for a Moneybird business that wants Bitcoin off the balance sheet and euros landing in the same account where the btw is calculated. Settlement options and eligible countries vary, so check Coinsnap's own terms for yours.

Swiss Bitcoin Pay

Non-custodial acceptance across Europe

A non-custodial service from Switzerland, built around Lightning, with no hardware required and no processor holding your funds. A fit for a Moneybird user who wants payments straight to a wallet they control, including invoices to Swiss and other European clients outside the eurozone. Country coverage and any fiat conversion options change, so confirm the current availability first.

BTCPay Server

Full self-custody, no third party in the money flow

Open source and non-custodial: payments settle straight to keys you hold, with no KYC and no processor between you and the money. It works anywhere Moneybird works, which helps when your clients are spread across the EU. If you do not want to run a server, our hosted BTCPay add-on gives you the same self-custody for 2,500 sats a month, fully managed.

Undecided? Start with Lightning Checkout if you want a provider in your own market, or our hosted BTCPay if you want full self-custody with no third-party account at all. Moving to a different provider later leaves your Moneybird connection untouched.

Why Moneybird users add Bitcoin

Cross-border invoices without the cross-border cost

Dutch and Belgian businesses invoice across the EU as a matter of course, and plenty bill clients outside the eurozone too. On the current options, an overseas client pays an international card rate plus an FX markup, or sends a transfer that leaves the money in transit for days. Bitcoin removes both. An Amsterdam agency gets paid by a client in Zurich or New York in seconds, on a weekend, at a fee measured in cents.

A flat fee instead of a percentage of everything you bill

Card and iDEAL payments cost a share or a fixed amount on every invoice, and the card share grows with your revenue. payinbtc.me charges 2,500 sats a month for unlimited invoices, roughly the price of a coffee, whether you bill 5,000 or 500,000 euros a year. Bitcoin network fees are fractions of a percent on top.

Final settlement, no chargebacks

A confirmed Bitcoin payment cannot be pulled back. For the freelancers, zzp'ers and service firms Moneybird is built for, invoicing work already delivered, that removes the disputes that can arrive months after a project closed.

Your btw workflow and Moneybird features keep working

Recurring invoices, reminders, your invoice templates, your accountant's access and your one-click btw-aangifte to the Belastingdienst: none of it changes. The connection is read-only, so payinbtc.me never writes to your administratie, and Bitcoin is added alongside iDEAL and your card options rather than replacing them.

Moneybird + Bitcoin: common questions

Can Moneybird accept Bitcoin payments natively?

No. Moneybird's online payment methods come from connected providers such as Mollie and Adyen, covering iDEAL, Wero, SEPA direct debit, credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Bancontact. There is no built-in crypto option. Moneybird's own help center states there is no ready-made way to process a Bitcoin payment inside the product, only a manual currency workaround for bookkeeping. payinbtc.me adds a Bitcoin payment option to your Moneybird invoices without waiting for native support and without changing anything in Moneybird.

Does payinbtc.me change anything inside my Moneybird account?

No. The connection is authorized on Moneybird's own screen and is read-only. We read invoice amount, currency and invoice number so the payment page shows the correct total. We cannot create, edit or delete facturen, contacts or ledger entries, and we cannot touch your btw records or bank connections.

How does the Bitcoin amount stay accurate if the price moves?

The conversion happens when your client opens the payment page, not when you send the invoice. They see the exact euro total of your Moneybird invoice converted to BTC at that moment's rate, with a short validity window on the quote. You receive the full invoice value.

How do I reconcile a Bitcoin payment in Moneybird?

Today, you get an email the moment the payment clears and you mark the invoice as paid in Moneybird yourself. Because our access is read-only, we do not write to your administratie. Automatic reconciliation is on our roadmap, and we will not claim it before it ships.

How do I handle btw on a Bitcoin payment?

Nothing changes in how you calculate or file btw. The invoice total, the btw and the invoice number stay exactly as Moneybird recorded them; Bitcoin is only the method your client uses to pay that euro total. You mark the invoice paid and your btw-aangifte to the Belastingdienst runs as it always has. For the tax treatment of receiving or holding Bitcoin, check with your accountant.

What does it cost?

Pay per invoice at 1,500 sats, roughly 1.50 euros, charged only when a client actually pays in Bitcoin. Or take unlimited invoices for 2,500 sats a month, about 2.50 euros, or 25,000 sats a year. Your first month is free, with three free invoices on the pay-per-use plan. We never take a percentage of your payments.

Do my clients need to know anything about Bitcoin?

They need a Bitcoin wallet. The payment page shows the amount and a QR code, they scan it, and it is done. Clients who prefer iDEAL, Bancontact or a card keep paying that way: the Bitcoin option sits next to your existing methods, it does not replace them.
